Agriculture Groups Join Forces to Reduce Nutrient Loss

For Immediate Release

Agricultural Nutrient Policy Council, Sustainable Phosphorus Alliance forge pact to champion responsible phosphate fertilizer use

WASHINGTON — April 6, 2026— The Agricultural Nutrient Policy Council (ANPC) and the Sustainable Phosphorus Alliance are pleased to announce they have signed a memorandum of understanding to better advocate for responsible use of phosphate fertilizers.

The collaboration formalizes their intent to combine resources for phosphate fertilizer research and outreach to reduce phosphorus losses in agriculture.

“ANPC has taken a leadership role in bridging the gap between government agencies, academia and farmers to reduce agricultural nutrient losses across the country,” said Courtney Briggs, president, ANPC. “Partnering with the Sustainable Phosphorus Alliance will help us to further that work while also allowing us to focus additional efforts on reducing phosphorus losses, a particularly difficult nutrient to manage.”

Similarly, the Sustainable Phosphorus Alliance brings public and private stakeholders from agriculture, water and mining sectors together to promote phosphorus recovery, recycling and efficient use.

“The Sustainable Phosphorus Alliance works broadly across the phosphates value chain to promote sustainable outcomes, and our partnership with ANPC adds tremendous depth and expertise to the treatment of farm nutrient management and loss reduction,” said Matthew Scholz, senior project manager, Sustainable Phosphorus Alliance. “Farms represent the master link in the value chain. Partnering as we have expands the reach of both organizations in our work to engage agricultural stakeholders on these issues.”

Effective February 23, 2026, the agreement focuses on:

  • Facilitating stakeholder introductions when appropriate;

  • Developing conferences and workshops; and

  • Enhancing marketing outreach of both organizations.

“While we’ve partnered with the Sustainable Phosphorus Alliance in the past, we’re excited to formalize this partnership to help farmers reduce phosphorus losses, expand research and, most importantly, protect water quality across the country,” Briggs said.
