ANPC and SERA-46 Help Connect University Researchers Tackling Nutrient Loss and Water Quality

Last month, at the 81st annual Soil and Water Conservation Society International Conference, attendees shared ideas, technologies and practices to inspire the future of conservation. Adjacent to the event, the Agricultural Nutrient Policy Council (ANPC) worked with Southern Extension and Research Activities committee number 46 (SERA-46) to host a breakfast to foster meaningful dialogue between the organizations. ANPC includes a wide range of agricultural stakeholders. SERA-46 includes university researchers and extension specialists working on issues related to nutrient loss and water quality.

More than 40 research partners attended. The meeting created a forum to share current research allowing others to learn what’s happening and to identify opportunities to connect with people or ideas to help further their own research tackling nutrient issues.  Researchers shared their top interests related to nutrient loss reduction and supporting agricultural livelihoods, and shared key questions they were grappling in their current work.

In addition, at the conference, ANPC led a panel discussion titled Beyond the Field Edge: Legacy Phosphorus, Lagged Transport, and Streambank Processes Driving Water Quality in the Mississippi River Basin.  This panel was a continuation of the discussions facilitated by ANPC in its February workshop. The researchers involved in this topic continue to collaborate to find solutions to the impact of phosphorus on water quality.
